The truth about LATEX mattresses
Why choose a Latex Rubber mattress
One of the most popular NATURAL support systems for a guaranteed good nights sleep is LATEX RUBBER. It is not new.... Dunlopillo Mattresses were very popular more than 50 years ago..
Now like any other technology there has been changes... and for the better.
I'm confused, what types of Latex are available?
- There are only two methods of latex manufacture. Latex is either made using the original continuous process (invented in the 1920’s) or the more advanced Talalay method (developed in the 1960’s).
What is so good about Talalay latex?
- Latex is naturally conforming, so you are assured optimal orthopaedic support in any sleep position.
- Alleviates areas of high pressure that cause you to toss and turn at night.
- Latex is also hypoallergenic, anti-microbial & dust-mite resistant
- Open cell structure is fully breathable (air can pass from cell to cell). This removes body moisture.
- Keeps you warmer in the winter, and cooler in the summer
Does Talalay use 100% natural Rubber?
- YES! Talalay Latex is a combination of 100% Latex rubber and synthetic material.
So, how is Talaly Latex made?
- Liquid rubber and compound is whipped into foam & poured into a mould.
- The pin core construction is made with rods piercing the mould.
- A vacuum is placed on the mould which creates a perfectly even mixture of latex & air bubbles.
- The material is then frozen to -30 degrees centigrade creating the open / interconnecting cell structure of Talalay.
- Carbon Dioxide and air is then pumped through the mould before heat of 115 degrees via the rods in the core creating an even temperature throughout.
- The cores are thoroughly washed. Only cored Talalay mattress cores are thoroughly washed in this way to rid of any impurities & dust.
- The cores are dried over 8 hours at a temperature of 85 degrees
What then is STANDARD NATURAL Latex?
- Latex uses the continuous Dunlop process.
- This latex does not have the consistent or supple characteristics of Talalay.
- It is not made in a vacuum, nor requires the extensive processing steps of Talalay.
- It is produced much cheaper than Talalay latex.
- It is not open cell structure.
- Latex produced by this process can use fillers such as clay or silica.
Is there any truth about latex allergies?
- This refers to medical latex products. The key culprit is a protein in natural latex that is not present in properly produced latex such as used for mattresses and pillows.
- Talalay Latex is thoroughly washed during manufacture, therefore does not contain any of these proteins that may cause allergic reactions.
Why is Talalay Latex more expensive?
- Talalay cores use pure latex rubber & synthetic latex manufactured by using the more involved Talalay process.
- Polyurethane foam is chemical based and much cheaper to produce. Foam is also lighter than latex foam.
- Talalay 100% latex, with no fillers, will outlive synthetic polyurethane foams by many years, so actually is NOT more expensive in the long run!
